This makes me think of one of the novels I read for my thesis “The Madonna of Excelsior,” where the latest African-American products (hair relaxers, skin bleaching creams, etc) find their way to South Africa and aid the South African women in their “quest for Whiteness” (as the author puts it).
I’m not even sure what’s going on, but I’m still disturbed.
